Canadian Study Permit — The First Step in a Long-Term Plan

A Canadian study permit is more than permission to attend school — it is, for many international students, the foundation of a multi-year pathway to Canadian permanent residency. With recent IRCC reforms tightening eligibility (PAL requirements, increased financial proof, study-permit caps), the margin for error has never been smaller. Our RCIC team prepares your study permit with both your education and your eventual immigration goals in view.

Program Overview

Study Permit Approvals Live in the Details

The Canadian study permit is required for any international student enrolled in a program longer than six months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). IRCC reviews each application against multiple factors: the legitimacy of the DLI, the suitability of the program to your background, your ability to support yourself financially, your ties to your home country, and your intent to leave Canada at the end of your studies (or your eligibility for a transition to PR).

Since 2024, IRCC has implemented a series of major reforms: a national cap on new study permits, a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) requirement for most undergraduate-level applicants, and significantly higher proof-of-funds expectations. The cost-of-living requirement was doubled from roughly C$10,000 to C$20,635 annually, and is now indexed against the LICO.

These changes mean that a study-permit application that would have succeeded two years ago may not succeed today. Our team applies current rules, current intake limits, and current visa-office trends to prepare an application built for today's bar.

A study permit is also a PR runway

For most of our students, the study permit is not the destination — it is the first step. We design every study permit application with the eventual PGWP, CEC, OINP Master's stream, or Federal Skilled Worker pathway in mind. The choice of school, program, length, and province all matter. We help you make those choices well.
